Show WALKER SETS ' RECORD Utah State's Scott Walker knocked off his own school record in the hurdles for the second time in as many days and ran legs on two of USU's fastest relays ever to help the Aggies to their best finish ever in the PCAA track championships here Saturday. San Jose State won its third straight team title and USU finished fourth in the two-day meet, which may not sound like much except when considering the caliber of competition. And Walker is a good example. He clocked a tremendous 50.56 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles Saturday and finished only second. San Jose State's Bernie Holloway turned in the second fastest time in the world this year, 49.30, to deny Walker his third straight PCAA title and his 19th straight victory in that event.. Walker, who set another record of 51.20 in the Friday's prelims, ran hurdle-for-hurdle with Holloway until he missed his steps at the seventh hurdle. Earlier in the day Walker joined Lyle Archibald and football players, Paul Jones and Geqrge Pearson to smash USU's oldest school record in the 400 meter relay. They clocked 40.78, breaking a record held by Roy Shivers, John Brown, Bill Thornton and Gary Johnson set in 1964. Walker and Company finished no better than fourth for their effort, though, as San Jose State won in 40.27 in the day's tightest race. And in the final event of the day, Walker joined Archibald, Mike Sak and Andy Cox to help the mile relay team to the second fastest clocking in USU history at 3:13.41, but the team placed fourth. |
