Boxers pocket triumphs at All-Indian tourney Members of the Vernal Boxing Club competed in an All Indian Tournament in Reno, Nev., May 14 and 15. Vernal's classy and hard hitting 147 pounder, Lucas Santio, took control and won a unanimous decision in a fight with Fred Lopez of Carson City, Nev. Lucas won the outstanding boxer award trophy. Eugene Woody, 132, Vernal, defeated Ward Simmons of the Lumi Nation in an exciting bout, but lost his second fight to Bobby Adamson of Carson City, Nev. Vernal's 139 pounder, Bobby San-Juan, San-Juan, was stopped in the second round by Joey Ortiz of Warm Springs, Calif, after being elbowed and hit in the head while down oh the mat. SanJuan had carried the first round and was scoring points in the second. Andy Santio of the Vernal Boxing Club was outpointed by James Harrison of the Reno Warriors. Santio was picked pick-ed the winner by three judges, but two judges named Harrison as the winner and gave Santio low scores. When all five cards were added up Harrison emerged as the winner. The Vernal Boxing Club took part in bouts in Orem May 6. Woody thumped Danny Lucero, 132, of the Joint in Draper and Vernal's John Culpepper, 80, defeated Ronnie Montoya of Salt Lake City. Montoya is a Junior Gloves champion of Utah. Chris Crites of Vernal Ver-nal holds the Utah Junior Glove title in the 70 pound class. Vernal will compete in Utah Junior Olympic fights for 10 to 14 year olds May 28 and 29 in Orem. "We have a team to be proud of and we're being recognized throughout the mid-western states," remarked Vernal Boxing Club coaches, Butch Burr and Harold Langley. The club has competed in bouts in Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming and also have battled fighters from California, Washington and Idaho. |
