COnomic indicators, with the ex- ception of tourist room sales, are all down from year-ago levels. Gross taxable sales were 10.4 percent higher in third quarter 1980 than in third quarter 1979. However inflation, as measured by the national consumer price index, increased 12.9 percent, indicating that gross taxable sales did not even keep pace With inflation, and in fact, dropped by 2.5 percent. Tourist room sales, on the other hand, seem to be booming. Compared to 1979, tourist room sales in 1980's third quarter doubled. This tremendous increase is probably an indication of the gradual build up in energy related activities, as the world price of crude oil spirals upward. New construction valuation for the district was down 35.6 percent in 1980 compared to 1979. The only construction con-struction indicator showing any gain was nonresidential additions, alterations, and repairs; a sign that owners found it more advantageous to repair or remodel than to build. For the period January-September 1980 oil production was 10.6 percent lower and natural gas production was 18.8 percent higher than during the same period in 1979, continuing an established trend. |
