Show Response to letter on school problems Dear Editor: Citizens for Better Education, Court Anderson, chairman; Lynn W. Nelson, vice chairman; Richard Davidson, vice chairman; LuRae Caldwell, secretary and members of the board, I am writing this to the Editor of the Vernal Express concerning the Thursday, March 5, 1981 edition, page 12, column 3. I do not live in Vernal, yet. Maybe someday I will. I am absolutely appalled ap-palled over the fact that you would consider jeopardizing our precious children just because you feel that you will lose federal money. Actually, we don't need federal money to run our schools. We would be much better off without it, then we could run our schools the right way. We could consider con-sider our children and their feelings and their concerns and their problems and their education without worrying about doing it the "Fed's" way. We know what our children need more than they do. My answer to your problem is the answer that one very fine principal in a school back East did. He was fired .. because he did it the right way. Let me tell you what he did. He had a perfect high school. All the students were very good. There was one student who was disrupting the school. This disruption was ruining an otherwise perfect high school, so what did the pricipal do? He sent the student home and told him not to come back till he could respect the school, students and teachers. Well, he got fired. Now that's a disgrace, because that's exactly ex-actly what we should do to students who do not want to come to school to learn. Hitting them is not the answer because they'll just go out and hit someone else. That does not solve the problem at all. The problem has to be dealt with the right way at the right time which is now with love and kindness and understanding un-derstanding and communicating between student, parents and teachers. Actually, a teacher's only license is a license to love the students. The sooner we all try this the better the world and our students will be. I also don't like your 2-hour discipline method. Parents ought to be responsible for disciplining their children. Let's all get together and listen to our children and listen to their problems and let them know about our problems. Let's love them and talk with them often. After all, children are our most prized possessions. Sincerely, BARBARA S. ALLEN Bountiful, Utah |
