Vernal Junior High Panthers capture wrestling tournament The Vernal Junior High A team captured cap-tured first place in the Vernal 7th and 8th Grade Tournament, Saturday with a total of 250 points. Craig placed second se-cond at 166' i points and Green River, Wyoming, netted third place at 130 points. Rangely nabbed fourth place at 121' 2 points and West placed fifth at 98' i counters. Roosevelt placed sixth at 71 1 v counters and Vernal's B team nabbed nab-bed seventh place at 57 points. Seven Vernal Junior High tusslers captured first place crowns in the tournament. tour-nament. Shelton Humphries, 65, placed first when he blanked Dennis Rowley of Rangely, 6 to 0. Humphries dropped Rowley for a takedown in the first round and added a reversal and two-point two-point near fall in the second round. Max Merkley captured the 80 pound crown when he nipped Dean Carter of Roosevelt, 10 to 8. Merkley jumped out to a 7 to 1 lead in the first round on a takedown, three-point near fall and a two-point near fall. Merkley added an escape and takedown in the third round. Merkley pinned Tony Rowley of Rangely Range-ly in 2:45 and downed Dale Wolgram of Craig. Craig Funk, 100, placed first when he pinned Joe Newell of the Vernal B team in 49 seconds. Funk also pinned Brian Smuin of Vernal C team in 41 seconds and Brent Butcher of Roosevelt in 1 :35. George Cook, 105, garnered first place when he downed Steve Lamorie of Green River, 6 to 2. Cook gained a takedown in the first round and added an escape and neutral in the second round. Lamorie gained a reversal in the seond round, but Cook acquired a reversal rever-sal in the third round. Cook pinned Eddie Ed-die Samuels of West in 45 seconds. and Hank Allred of Rangely in 19 seconds. Robert Merrill won the 119 pound championship when he blanked Mark Winward of West, 4 to 0. Merrill gained a takedown in the first round and a reversal in the third round. Merrill also downed Chris Baker of Rangely and pinned Jerry Ixjpez of Craig at the 2:20 mark. Mike Slaugh acquired the 132 pound title when he pinned Dan Whiting of Craig in 40 seconds. Slaugh also downed Rick Porter of the Vernal B team. Iirry Curtis, heavyweight, placed first when he pinned Ferry Murdock of West in the second round. Craig's Mike Turney captured first place in the 70 pound class when he nipped nip-ped Claude Rose of Rangely, 6 to 3. (,'raig Phillips, West, placed third in the 70 pound division when he pinned Richard Horrocks of Vernal. Horrocks placed fourth. Phillips downed Darrin Johnson of the Vernal B team and Jody Allee of West. Rose downed Phillips. Shane Frost, West, 75, nabbed first place w hen he edged Vernal's Ryan Sid-doway, Sid-doway, 2 to 0. Frost scored his winning points in the second round on a reversal. Siddoway placed second. Frost pinned Wade Hoffman Criag, 4:01 and Kent Boss, Rangely, in 45 seconds. Siddoway pinned Pat Mahaney, Vernal B team, 3:44 and Bill Deutsch of Green River, 3:55. Deutsch pinned Boss in 33 seconds for third place. Wolgram nabbed third place when he pinned Rowley. Gene Carter of Roosevelt acquired first place in the 85 pound class when he pinned Mike Smith in the third round. Carter gained a reversal in the second round and Smith gained a reversal in the third round. Carter added a reversal rever-sal and a pin in the third round. Carter also downed Bart Neilsen of Rangely and Blake Harder of Craig. Smith pinned pinn-ed John Reyos, West, 2:15 and Todd Heslep, Green River, 2:26. Smith placed plac-ed second. Harder pinned Heslep in the battle for third place. Alan Chapman, Green River, 90, pocketed first place when he downed Vernal's David Gurr, 14 to 11. Gurr had a 5 to 4 lead after one round due to a reversal, two-point near fall and an escape. The match was tied at 10-10 at the end of the second round due to a reversal, three-point near fall by Gurr and a reversal, two two point near falls in the third round by Chapman. Chapman Chap-man scored four points in the third round on two reversals and Gurr gained an escape to make the final score: Chapman, 14 and Gurr, 11. Chapman downed Chris Powell of Rangely and pinned Ronnie Curry and Roosevelt. Gurr pinned Shane Call of Green River in 53 seconds and pinned Danny Pohl, West, 16 seconds. Powell placed third when he downed Call, 8 to 3. Shawn Waters, Green River, 95, netted net-ted first place when he nipped Devin Bailey, Vernal, 6 to 2. Bailey dropped Waters for a takedown in the first round, but Waters gained an escape and reversal in the second round and added three more points in the third round for a 6 to 2 victory. Waters pinned Greg Jaramillo of Vernal and pinned Ross Wennerman, Rangely. Bailey pinned David Gardner, West, in 16 seconds and pinned Todd Fabian of Green River in 4:04. Jaramillo placed third when he downed Gardner, 10 to 1. Jaramillo also delealed Blaine Garcia of West and Fabian. Fa-bian. Smuin captured third place in the lixi pound class when he blanked Frost, 4 to 0. Smuin also downed Shawn Guffy, Craig and Rood ol Green River. Newell downed Frost and pinned Rood. Travis Drollinger, 105, placed third when he ' pinned Allred of Rangely. Gary Murray captured third place in the 112 pound class w hen he pinned Bob Hanson, Rangely, in the second round. . Murray also defeated Rhett Coy of Rangely and was downed by Mark Voloshin of Craig. Ken Campbell, Vernal, Ver-nal, 119, placed third when he nipped Derrick Mecham, Roosevelt, 5 to 3. Campbell also downed Chris Baker of Rangely and was defeated by Winward. Larry Ruber of Vernal placed third in the 126 pound class due to a 3-2 win in his match with Lee Prime of Green River. Prime gained a takedown in the first round and Ruber garnered a two-point two-point near fall in the second round. Huber won the match in the third round due to a penalty point. Ruber also downed down-ed Matt Sunkees, Vernal and Prime. Mark Zimmerman, Craig, captured first place when he pinned Mike Steele of Rangely. Rick Porter, Vernal, placed first w hen he used 51 seconds to pin Jim Johnson of Roosevelt. Lloyd Bingham, Roosevelt, captured first place due to a pin in the third round in his encounter with Bill Taylor at 138 pounds. Taylor downed David Williams of the Vernal B team. Jay D. Poowegup captured second place when he was toppled by Shane Harris, Craig, 145, 9 to 3. Poowegup downed Derek Frost of Vernal due to a pin. Steve Fstes, Green River pinned Frost in the third round in the battle for third place. Phil Belk of Craig pinned Ham Long of Green River in 58 seconds in the battle for first place in the 155 pound class. Tomlinson of Rangely pinned pin-ned Greg Cobbs, Vernal, in the second round in the clash for third place. |
