Duchesne crew wins thrillers I in region round robin meef I One thing that can be said about ' ames involving Duchesne High School al the region round robin at Park City, Friday and Saturday is that they aren't dull. Duchesne nipped South Rich, Friday night when Tren Grant fired in a 35-foot shot at the buzzer, which gave the Eagles a 42 to 40 win. The Eagles' prayers were answered when a shot at the buzzer by North Summit went in and out for a 50-49 Duchesne victory, Saturday. "Grant was at the left hash mark when he fired the ball into the hoop. We had fairly balanced scoring in the game. The score was low because South Rich held the ball on us. Tal Fabrizio scored 16 points and Blair Madsen and Grant scored in double figures. The lead went back and forth. Both teams had five point leads at times and South Rich had a 23 to 22 lead at the end of the first half," stated Duchesne coach, Stan Young, who is a former Uintah coach. The shoe was on the other foot for Duchesne in the game with North Summit, Saturday as the Braves had the ball for the last second shot. The Brave hoopster released the ball from the top of the key and the ball went in and out of the hoop. "It was a see-saw affair. We (Duchesne) were behind 28 to 24 at the end of the first half and had a 39 to 38 lead after three quarters of action. Madsen and Fabrizio hit some key shots for us in the third quarter. Madsen had three field goals in the third quarter and Fabrizio put in two," said Young. Young added, "Duchesne had a five point lead with three minutes left in the game, but we missed some free throws and North Summit came down and scored. Grant was our top scorer in the game with 18 points and he had five field goals in the first quarter and that is what got us going. Fabrizio had ten points arid Madsen, Wayne Hamberg scored eight points." The victories over South Rich and North Summit qualified Duchesne for the 1-A State Tournament. Duchesne will take on Dugway for fourth and fifth place in Region 11, Saturday at Park City. The state tournament will begin at the Marriott Center, Wednesday, March 18. Tintic downed Altamont, 49 to 46 and the Longhorns will go to the state meet as the third place team. Tintic and North Rich will battle for first place, Saturday. Manila was defeated by Wendover and South Summit. "We were terrible at the free throw line and we were lucky to win, but we played good basketball from the floor. We couldn't do anything from the free throw lane, but we played our two best defensive games of the season. We received balanced scoring and we rebounded exceptionally well. Fabrizio had 16 rebounds in the win over North Summit," stated Young. Altamont was behind by six points with three minutes left in the game with Tintic at the Region 11 round robin in Park City, Saturday, but the Longhorns stole the ball six times in a row and turned up empty in the scoring department as they missed several easy layups, which enabled Tintic to drop Altamont, 49 to 46. The score was tied at 11-11 after one quarter of action and Tintic had a 22 to 19 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Tintic crew had a 35 to 27 lead after three quarters of action. Altamont outscored Tintic, 19 to 14 in the fourth quarter, but lost the ball game by the score of 49 to 46. Lindon Hansen was the top scorer for Altamont with 15 points and Mike Todd tossed in 11 points. Wayne Miles put in eight points. Also scoring for Altamont were David Brotherson, 4; Brent Miles, 4; Rob Lindsay, 2 and Eddie Fisher, 2. "We had our chances, but we didn't convert the turnovers into baskets. We missed two or three one and one situations late in the game and Tin-tinc's Tin-tinc's 6'6" center, Yadon, was hard for us to stop. He led the Tintic crew with 17 points. We shot poor from the field and didn't hit from outside. We played good defense, but we didn't hit our shots," stated Kim Peterson, Altamont hoop coach. |
