GEORGE J0HNSTUN won 7 blue ribbons, one 3rd place ribbon, a special award for woodcraft, a certificate for outstanding achievement, an award for the best dried arrangement and an award for the oldest exhibitor in the show. These awards were won during the Spring Home and Garden Festival Flower Show in Salt Lake City, Feb. 26 through March 1. To the right of Mr. Johnstun is the dried flower arrangement he won awards on as well as the plate award and a sample of the type wood artistry that he creates. George Johnstun wins awards in garden show George Johnstun received a variety of awards at the recent Spring Home and Garden Festival Flower Show held in the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City from Feb. 2G through March 1. Five blue ribbons for artistic flower arrangements were just the beginning of Johnstun's wins. He also placed with two blue ribbons in woodcraft. He received a special award for woodcraft and a third place rosette ribbon for flower arrangements. Johnstun went on after winning these honors to place with the btst dried arrangement and an award ior 111.- oid"flt exhibitor in tl' show. Lastly, he whs ajrotxi .1 'certificate 'cer-tificate for cash for outstanding achievement. "I have been to every show except one since the shows Ix-gan in the early 19?t)'s." Johnstun stated The show he missed was due to an automobile accident ac-cident in the family. He entered his first art exhibit in 1917 at the county fairgrounds in Vernal. The wooden table picture with this article is the wooden table he displayed in 1917. Johnstun is a retired carpenter; he uses such woods as black walnut, aspen, Siberian elm, box elder, lodgepole pine and mahogany to work with. Born and raised in Vernal, Johnstun, was the son of Alma J. Johnstun and . Ioretta " Henry Johnstun. Alma and Ioretta came to Vernal in 1876. They owned the first sawmill in Vernal and were among the first pioneers of the valley. Johnstun is presently living on the original homestead land in Vernal. The land has stayed in the family and has never been sold. |
