Show ' 'V, vs? rv J i '"f PROCLAIMING APRIL as cancer month is Mayor Samuel Snyder. Holding American Cancer Society posters are Ann Olden and Renee Shiner, chairman: April proclaimed cancer month "You are the key to cancer control," says the theme to the American Cancer Society's annual educational and fund raising crusade to begin in April. "Each individual, young and old, male and female, has a part to play in the continuing fight to control cancer," said Renee Shiner, chairman of the Vernal American Cancer Society (ACS) Cancer Crusade. This is Mrs. Shiners' second year as chief fund raiser for the Uintah Unit of ACS. She has already been involved in several funding events this year. "We'll be asking not only friends, neighbors, and relatives, but absolute strangers to consult their doctors about cancer-related checkups. In addition, our volunteers will ask people to help support the American Cancer Society's programs to facilitate the prevention, detection, treatment and ultimate elimination of cancer as a threat to public health," Mrs. Shiner said. "We have an army of more than 2 million dedicated volunteers everywhere in the country which is urging urg-ing all people to learn about the society's life-saving information and share their knowledge with others," she said. "Support of research is one way to fight cancer," she added, "but I wonder how many people realize that we could save many more lives from cancer right now with just the knowledge we already have if only everyone understood how important it is to detect cancer in its early and most curable stage." "The entire emphasis of the 1981 crusade is on the individual," Mrs. Shiner said. "We're out to tell people that it's what they don't know about cancer that can hurt. We want to enlist each one in some phase of our cancer control program. That's why our theme this year is 'You Are the Key to Cancer Control.'" |
