Spring clean-up is a good time to be on the alert for overfusing and for faulty electrical cords and connections. Here are some electrical checkpoints by the National Fire Protection Association: 1. Look for frayed, cracked insulation and loose connections on lamp, appliance ap-pliance and exteasion cords, including cords behind furniture or otherwise out of sight. Never attempt repairs like taping over bad insulation be fire-safe, fire-safe, and replace the cord 2. If you are running any cords unde r rugs, get rid of this hazard right away. Traffic and vacuuming will wear cord insulation to the danger point without your noticing it. If there is no outlet nearby, have a qualified electrician install one where you need it. 3. Another sure way to invite disaster is to rig electric cords over nails or hooks. Never do it! 4. Don't rely on extension cords on a permanent basis -they are a poor and risky substitute for permanent wiring. 5. Extend spring clean-up to your fuse box. Throw away all burned-out fuses and check others to make sure you ar e using only 15-ampere fuses (except on special circuits designed for heavier loads). Never be tempted to use larger-than-recornmend'd I uses in an effort to avoid blowouts. For overall electrical safety, have all wiring in your home brought up to the modern standards of the National Electrical Code. |
