The show was held in the Salt Piioce , "'t Lake City, Thur., February 26 through Sun.,' March 1. Here av inspects one of his plants in his home soisrium. Kay Haws receives honors in horticulture Kay M. Haws recently won six blue ribbons, a blue rosette, runner-up - sweepstakes winner receiving a trophy, and a cash award for outstanding certificate cer-tificate of merit in the horticulture division divi-sion of the Spring Home and Garden Festival Flower Show. The show was held in the Salt Palace, February 26 thourgh March 1. This was the third year that the former Vernal resident, Kay Haws has entered the Sait Lake City show. He entered four cactus which all placed with blue ribbons. He also won blue ribbons rib-bons on a pink geranium and a pink kolenthoe. A photo of Kay's blue rosette , award 'winning- impatiens plant-was featured in the March 1, addition of the "Salt Lake Tribune". For a hanging rabbits foot fern, Kay won a cash award for outstanding certificate of merit. At the end of the line of the coveted awards he won runner-up sweepstakes for which he was awarded a trophy. Born in Vernal in 1930, Kay's mother is a resident of Vernal, Mrs. Millie Haws; Kay's father, Morris Haws, is deceased. Kay taught school at Central School in Vernal as well as worked for the Bureau of Reclamation at Flaming Gorge Dam for two years. He is a graduate in elementary education from USU. He also was a teacher and camp director for the Ute Indian summer camps for six summers beginning in 1959. Presently, he is employed with the state office of education and lives with his family in Bountiful. . Growing plants was a hobby for Kay. The hobby manifest itself into a solarium built onto his home. Kay's family worked on the hobby as a family project and built the structure themselves. During the next year he would like to develop the art of growing bonsai bougen bilia plants. |
