LAURA CHEW, helps Ashley kindergarten students practice prac-tice getting on and off bus' safely. I i - '. s-r : MRS. LAURA CHEW, Uintah School District bus driver, talks with students at Ashley Elementary about bus safety. '.'CI Safety director speaks at Ashley Elementary Laura Chew, Director of Student Safety for Uintah School District, visited Ashley Elementary last Thursday, Thurs-day, Oct. 16 to talk to students and explain ex-plain the great importance of bus safety. safe-ty. Mrs. Chew stated that it is a bus driver's greatest concern to get the children to and from school every day safely and her personal concern to get them there happy as well. To do this, the children need to remember certain rules: 1) Students must not get off the bus at places other than their regular stop unless they have written permis- sion from parents; 2) No profanity, shouting, whistling of scuffling on the bus; 3) No eating on the bus except when permitted by the driver; 4) If students damage the bus, the parents are responsible to pay; 5) Any student who cannot behave on the bus may forfeit his right to ride the bus. Mrs. Chew showed a film to some of the students showing what kind of tragic accidents' can happen when students cause distractions on the bus ' or are otherwise careless about safety rules. Students learned that there arc "death zones" around the bus, in front, in back and along the side where pass ing cars or the bus driver may not have a clear view of the student. Students need to stay out of these places and remember that if they are "close enough to touch the bus, they are too close". Students also need to remember never to throw things like hats, papers, jackets etc. on a bus which might hurt someone or distract the driver. Mrs. Chew said book bags really help students because they leave hands free and keep students from dropping papers and books which can be hazardous. hazar-dous. Mrs. Chew has gone to several of the schools here to give such programs and will return to Ashley on Wed., Nov.l talk to parents at their regular P i meeting. She feels it's extremely ji portant for parents to be aware of safety and that once they have seen I li presentation, they will have a mi' greater appreciation of bus safety. jesi ,10 Everyone is invited to join in the ' on Halloween night at the Ash Elementary Halloween Carnival, (),5 31 beginning at 5:30 p.m. There will f" dinner of sloppy Joes, etc., also gait G booths, and a spook alley.
