Utes outplay Murray in 2nd half, but lose 37-12 The Uintah Ute sophomore team scored two touchdowns in the second half, but the Murray Spartans went on to win the rain plagued football game " by the score of 37 to 12, Oct. 15. Uintah scored its first touchdown in the game on a five yard sweep by Pat Jenkins in the third quarter. The Utes failed to gain the two-point conversion on a run by Jenkins. The touchdown was set up on a 60 yard kickoff return by the Utes' Jerry Haslem. The Utes gained their second touchdown touch-down when Clark Emery carried the ball two yards and into the end zone in the fourth quarter. Uintah failed on the two-point conversion attempt. Runs by Jenkins, Emery and Darrin Bailey moved the Utes down the field. Murray had a 26 to 0 lead at the end of the first half. The SDartans scored a couple of touchdowns on long passes. "It was raining and the field was wet. Our defenders slipped and fell down on the long bombs by Murray for touchdowns," touch-downs," stated Uintah sophomore coach, Kim Oliverson. The Spartans scored 26 points in the first half, but the Utes outscored the Murray team in the second half, 12 to 11. "We outplayed Murray in the second half. All our players got in the game and I was happy with the way our players, who came off the bench, did in the game. They came in the game and fired us up," said Oliverson. Oliverson added, "Murray killed us in the first half. They got a lot of long gains and got the breaks. We began running more in the second half and held on to the ball better. We made less mistakes because our athletes were fired up." The Uintah Utes have a 0-5 record, but they have been involved in two close games. Uintah suffered an 18 to 12 double overtime loss to Tooele and was edged by Cyprus, 24 to 18. |
