Show Rapid growth? Dear Editor: Recent issues of the Vernal Express hav,e once again indicated the possibility that the Vernal area will experience rapid growth due to oil shale development. If predictions are correct, it is likely that life in Vernal will be significantly different in coming years. Many Basin residents, particularly businessmen, appear to favor such growth despite problems it may bring. Certainly any small community benefits from increased economic activity. However, the real issue in Vernal's situation is whether the contemplated growth is worth the sacrifices which will be made in the quality of life. I fear that Vernal residents may in the long run be shortchanging them-' selves and their children for what appears to be a more advantageous position at present. Vernal may discover too late, as many other cities have, that all growth is not necessarily good. Sincerely, WHIT WASHBURN Los Angeles, Calif. |
