Murray rallied in the second half to nip the Utes, 15 to 8, Thursday. I yiinitfccolh) Wo - le(j(s I b7(q p inures ODD (2pfirD The Uintah Utes won the first half, 8 ! to 0 and Murray won the second half, J5 to 0 and when the halfs were put together the Spartans emerged as the winner by the score of 15 to 8, Thursday in Murray. The loss places Uintah in a 1-3 tie for fourth place. with Jordan and Murray is in a second place tie with Jordan at 3-1. Uintah's Rick Morton carried the football to the Uintah 40 yard line on the kickoff, but a clipping penalty was called on the Utes and the ball was ; moved to the 17 yard line. However, the ! Utes didn't let the call bug them as Mark Robb completed a halfback pass to Randy Smuin, which placed the Uintah crew on the 32 yard line. The ball was given to Robb on the Uintah Utes' second play of the game. Robb carried the ball 68 yards down the field on an off-tackle play lor the first touchdown of the game, which gave the Utes a 6 to 0 lead. The ball was dropped on the extra point kick attempt and the holder, Jeff Good, fired a pass toward Dave Emery, but the Uintah footballer was unable to come up with the football for the two-point conversion. Uintah's Smuin put a mighty rush on the Murray quarterback, Brent Hilton, which resulted in a loss for the Spartans and Murray was unable to gain a first down. Dave Erickson was called in to punt and Smuin almost blocked the kick. However, the ball was returned to Murray when Dave Emery fumbled the football and it was recovered by a Spartan player. Emery redeemed himself for his fumble when he intercepted a Hilton aerial on the Uintah 35 yard line and motored to Murray's 34 yard line. I Emery carried the ball on the first play to the 24 yard line for a first down and a screen pass to Robb placed the Utes on the 13 yard line. Emery advanced to the ten yard line on a dive play, but the Utes were unable to get any closer to the goal line and the score at the end of the first quarter was: Uintah, 6 and Murray, 0. The Utes put heavy pressure on the Murray offensive team in the second quarter as Robert Schultz decked Tony Peterson of Murray behind the line of scrimmage for a huge loss and the Utes' Smuin blocked an Erickson punt for a safety. The ball rolled out of the end zone before Smuin could pounce on it for a touchdown. The safety increased in-creased Uintah's lead to 8 to 0 at the 10:10 mark of the second quarter. Morton returned the ball ' on the kickoff by Murray to the 32 yard line and he garnered a pass at the 11 yard line. Morton's defensive opponent fell down as the ball was on its way to Morton. Emery carried the football to the nine yard line. A few plays later a penalty was called on the Utes and the ball was moved to the Murray 25 yard line. Smuin nabbed a pass at the eight yard line on a fourth down play, but the Utes didn't pick up enough yards on the play for a first down. The Utes stopped the Murray offensive of-fensive machine once again and Emery received the punt on the Murray 36 yard line. Uintah was whistled for a holding penalty, but Ralph Warhv connected with Smuin on a halfback pass for a first down on Murray's seven yard line. Runs by Robb and Emery placed the Utes on Murray's seven yard line. However, Fat Jenkins, was stopped half a foot away from the goal line on a quarterback sneak and Murray took over the football. The score at the end of the first half was Uintah, 8 and Murray 0. Murray went to the air in the second half as the Spartans moved into Uintah territory at the 44 yard line on a pass to Kendall Larsen. A personal foul on the Utes placed Murray on the Uintah 24 yard line. The Ute defense dropped Murray for a number of losses and the Spartans were faced with a fourth down and 12 on the 26 yard line. Murray won the fourth down gamble as John Durfey made a leaping catch at the Uintah 3 yard line. Hilton scored Murray's first touchdowp on a one yard quarterback keeper at the 7:04 mark of the third quarter. Hilton fired a pass to Rick Elorreaga for the two-point conversion, which tied up the game at 8-8. The Spartans advanced deep into Uintah territory at the ten yard line on a pass reception by Elorreaga. However, Schultz and Smuin put heavy pressure on quarterback, Hilton and the ball was intercepted by the Utes' Warby at the 19 yard line. A pass was nabbed by Smuin on the first play by the Utes, but Smuin fumbled the football and Murray's John Pelletier nabbed the ball on the Uintah 22 yard line. Durfey leaped high for a pass from Hilton and came down on the Uintah five yard line. Peterson carried the ball to the one yard line and scored the game's winning touchdown on a one yard run at the 5:44 mark of the fourth quarter. The extra point kick by Erickson gave the Spartans a 15 to 8 lead.
