Show URGES ECONOMY ON GRADUATION DAY U. S. Commissioner Claxton Advises High School Principals to Do Without With-out Non-essentials. Graduation exercises should be simpler this year than in ordinary times and less money should be spent for these exercises, exer-cises, as well as for invitations and costumes, cos-tumes, according to a communication received re-ceived by the principals of high schools In-Salt Lake City from the U. S. commissioner com-missioner of education, P. P. Claxton. "Approximately 300,000 young men and women will graduate from high school, normal school and college this spring and early summer," says the letter, "and approximately ap-proximately 1,300,000 from the elementary or grammar schools. If each of the 300,-000 300,-000 should spend unnecessarily ?10 (a slight estimate), on graduation exercises, costumes, invitations, dinners, etc., the total would amount to 53,000.000. If half of those graduating from the lower schools should spend unnecessarily an average of only $5, this would amount to something more than 53,000,000, making a total of 56,000,000. which is not an unreasonable estimate." Mr. Claxton suggests thVt "all graduating graduat-ing exercises be as simple as possible" iri order to save money, and that the amount thus saved be invested in war savings stamps. |
