Show SHARP BREAKS OCCUR IN THE CORN MARKET Numerous Rallies Due to Covering by Shorts Fail to Stop the Decline. CHICAGO, May 14. Corn underwent sharp breaks in value today, owing largely large-ly to official announcement that there was plenty of seed on hand to supply all requirements this season. Prices closed unsettled, lc net lower to c advance, ad-vance, with May at $1.27 and July at $1.43 to $1.43. Oats finished unchanged un-changed to c down and provisions off 37c to $1. Despite numerous rallies, due to covering cover-ing by shorts, the weakness of corn prices increased as the end of the session approached, ap-proached, and the close was at virtually the lowest level of the day. In this connection, con-nection, bearish sentiment appeared to be influenced to a considerable extent by an understanding that the department of agriculture expected to assist farmers in obtaining seed corn for replanting, if first planting failed, and that even then a surplus would remain. Prospects, too, of warmer weather that would facilitate planting tended further to weaken the market, and so, likewise, did slackness of demand for Immediate delivery. Oats eased down with corn. Crop conditions con-ditions were excellent and there were no bids from exporters. Provisions dropped to the extreme limit allowed for one day as a result of government gov-ernment notice to packers that prices to retailers must not exceed the prices charged on May 1.
