WASHINGTON IS STILL IN THE DARK Much Speculation Over the Announcement ; War Department De-partment Without Official Offi-cial Information. WASHINGTON, May 14. Formal repudiation re-pudiation of the message sent through Ottawa from London, announcing; that the American army was not to be used at the battle front until it became a complete and self-supporting- force, was received today at the British embassy. Lord Reading, the ambassador, authorized author-ized the following statement: "Lord Reading has received official information in-formation that the telegram sent through Ottawa i;id not emaiwt from the British war cabinet and is totally at variance va-riance with their views. Lord Reading is officially informed that the statement contained in it was made without any knowledge of the prime minister or of the British cabinet." There still is much speculation here over the origin of the. mysterious 'announcement 'an-nouncement which 'reached Ottawa as a part of the official war summary. So far as can be learned, no official information infor-mation has reached the war department to explain the matter. |
