WHAT did the American Red Cross do with the $100,000,000 contributed contrib-uted to it last June? That Question Ques-tion is made pertinent by the fact that the American people are asked to subscribe a similar sum during' dur-ing' the week beginning Monday, May 20, because the first $100,000,000 is almost spent, and a statement of how it was spent is owing to those wno subscribed It. The war fund appropriations up to March 1, 1918, amounting to a total of $77,721,918.82, did the following things, among others, at home and abroad. UNITED STATES. Organized and trained forty-five ambulance am-bulance companies, totaling TioSO men, for service with American soldiers and sailors. sail-ors. Tiuilt and maintained four laboratory cars for emergency use In stamping ut epidemics at cantonments and training camps. Started work of eradicating malarial-bearing malarial-bearing mosquitos in the zones immediately imme-diately surrounding cantonments. Established camp service bureaus to look out for comfort and welfare of soldiers sol-diers in training. Supplied 2,000,000 sweaters to soldiers and sailors. Mobilized 14,000 trained nurses for care of our men. Established a department of civilian relief re-lief and opened training schools for home service workers. Planned recreation houses at all cantonments can-tonments and training camps. Increased membership from scant half-million half-million to approximately 23,000,000. Total amount of money appropriated for relief work in United States to March 1, $8,589,899. FRANCE. Established infirmaries and rest stations sta-tions along all routes followed by the American troops in France. Built canteens for use of French, and American soldiers at the front, also at railroad junctions and in Paris. Supplied American troops with comfort com-fort kits and sent them Christmas presents. pres-ents. Established a hospital distributing service ser-vice that supplies 3423 French military hospitals and a surgical dressing service that supplies 2000. ' Provided an artificial limb factory and special plants for the manufacture of splints and nitrous oxide gas. Established a casualty service for gathering gath-ering information in regard to wounded and missing. Opened a children's refuge and hospital in the war zone and established a medical medi-cal center and traveling dispensary to accommodate 1200 children in the reconquered recon-quered sections of France. Planned extensive reclamation work in the invaded sections of France, from which the enemy has been driven; this work now being! carried out with the cooperation co-operation of the Society of Friends and an alumnae unit from Smith college. Established a large central warehouse In Paris and numerous distribution warehouses ware-houses at Important points from the sea to the Swiss border for storing of hospital hos-pital supplies, food, soldiers" comforts, tobacco, to-bacco, blankets, clothing, beds and other articles of relief. Secured and operate 400 motor car vehicles ve-hicles for the distribution of supplies. Opened a hospital and convalescent home for the repatriated children at Evian; also established an ambulance service ser-vice for the adult repatries who are now returning from points within the German lines at the rate of 1000 a day. Organized a nurses' service for American Ameri-can army use. Established twenty dispensaries in the American army zone to improve health conditions in that section before the coming com-ing of American troops. Total amount of money appropriated for relief work in France to March 1, $30,936,103. BELGIUM. Erected warehouses and stores to serve as centers of relief distribution. Started reconstruction work in reconquered recon-quered territory, supplying repatriates with temporary dwellings, tools, furniture, furni-ture, vfarm animals and supplies essential essen-tial to giving them a fresh start in life. Appropriated $600,000 for the relief of Belgian children, covering their removal from territories under bombardment and the establishment and maintenance of them in colonies. Provided funds for the operation of a hospital for wounded Belgian soldiers and for part of the equipment of a typhoid ty-phoid sanitarium. Total amount of money appropriated for relief work in Belgium to March 1, $2,086,131. ITALY. Provided the Italian army with three complete motor ambulance sections, comprising com-prising sixty ambulances, forty trucks and 100 American drivers. Contracted for ten complete field hospitals hos-pitals for use by the Sanita Militaire and the Italian Red Cross. Supplied 1,000,000 surgical dressings. Opened relief headquarters in nine regional re-gional districts of Italy. Established a hospital for refugees at Rimini. Opened a canteen for soldiers at Milan. Planned and made appropriations for extensive relief work among the refugees refu-gees in all parts of Italy. Total amount of money appropriated for relief work in Italy to March 1, $3,-5SS.S26. |
