(By the Associated Press) Falling through the clouds, an American airplane crashed to earth two kilometers behind the American lines In the Toul sector late this afternoon, killing kill-ing both the pilot and the observer. How the machine happened to drop is a mystery that may never bo solved. One of three things is believed to have happened. hap-pened. An enemy aviator hidden in the clouds surprised It. a stray piece from a German antiaircraft shell hit It or an accident ac-cident caused It to collapse. The machine was seen Hying over the lines and antiaircraft shells were bursting around it. Suddenly It swerved and disappeared dis-appeared In a fleecy cloud. The next thing observers on tho ground saw of the plane, it was hurtling downward through the cloudbank toward tho wound.
