Show Names in the News. Billet (pronounced bil et). The original significance of the word is a ticket given to the soldier by the billetmaster or other officer requesting the person to whom it is addressed to provide board and lodging. Hence the term is now generally used to designate any place where soldiers are quartered when not in action. Drumfire is continuous artillery fire, so-called from the fact that the reports cf the guns follow each other so closely as to resemble the roll of a drum. "Tracer" bullets are bullets that are illuminated as they speed through the air so that they may be watched from the time they leave the gun until they hit the target. They are used especially bv anti-aircraft gunners and aviators to find the range of enemy. |
