The pounding of slakes unci t ho scurrying about of khakl-olad khakl-olad forms through the trees tonight showed that the husky Beehive soldin 5 were littlo affected by their stiff fourteen four-teen miles of hot footing' on tho first leg of their Journey to IOS Angeles and return. re-turn. Already curls of smoke nro beginning begin-ning lo rise from the grove, giving promises prom-ises of early mess ami plenty of liiue to rest up tor tomorrow's bike. Snatches of song are also beard lt ing from the trees showing tho men sl have, their "pep" and that, fourteen miles of biking under full pack Is n. cinch for American "Sammies when their homes have been hardened by months of training. train-ing. The camp tonight is a mile south of Delrnar, one of California's most beautiful beauti-ful seashore resorts, and the Utah men feel fortunate to have been able to hike along such a route. Promptly at 7, o'clock this morning tin-Utah tin-Utah men stepped off toward the north with the regimental band heading them with a lively marching tune. It was not 7:05 or even 7:01, but 7 o'clock on the dot when the order "Forward" came and the regiment swung away. Right at the Dot. This Is doing it In real army style, for generally the thousands of details that must be attended to in preparation for a long march delay things at least a few minutes. But such was not the case this morning and the promptness and thorough thor-ough execution of orders brought a smile to Colonel Webb's face and very favorable favor-able comments from the scores of officers offi-cers and men of other commands who watched the get-away outsido tho camp limits. The bandsmen deposited their Instruments In a wagon and, leading the long column, struck out in mighty strides for La Jolla and the sea. This speed was fine for the musicians, who were free from all packs and equipments, but it was not so merry for the artillery men, and after five miles had been covered, Colonel Colo-nel Webb called a halt. The soldiers were allowed fifteen minutes' min-utes' rest and the order came for assembly. as-sembly. Colonel Webb then dismounted and for an hour set the pace for march and the terrible things the artillery men said about the bandsmen were forgotten. Songs arose from the long column of men as they trudged along through the dust. March on Beach. At 11 o'clock the column turned lvn the Torrey Pines grade and ma i-s upon the sandy white beach. Here theT, stacked their rifles and each man pulled forth his threo huge sandwiches from his pack and began the midday meal. Speed was maintained in eating ami a fey moments later hundreds of the soldy doffed their shoes and were wadlivj in the copl waves. A few moments wafnl-lowed wafnl-lowed here and the men struck out again with added zest. Three miles further on the men turned into the grove to make their first camp. The day has been without incident. To protect the artillery men Colonel Webb today issued an order that bathing has been prohibited along the route with the exception of beaches that are amply provided pro-vided with life-saving paraphernalia and life guards. Due to the short march tomorrow to-morrow the men will be allowed to sleep until t o'clock and the start from here will not be made until S o'clock the following day. , |
