Show AWARDS PROPOSED FOR DEADFIGHTERS Bravery of Men Drowned in Rescue Attempt Is Cited. CAMP KEARNY, San Diego, Cal., May 29. "The highest award possible for the United States lo giant." is recommended for the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives in a tide rip at Ocean Beach, San Diego, May 5, in a special report filed today bv a board of officers of the For-' For-' tieth division, which investigated the af- fair. All the men lost their lives attempting attempt-ing to rescue others. Certificates of merit were recommended for a number of others who did rescue work. Those recommended for highest awards were: M. P. Hanson, machinist's mate, naval air station. North Island. Sergeant Herman Hauber, 159th (California) (Cali-fornia) infantry. Sergeant Emerson Donaldson, 115th ammunition train. Corporal Granville Taylor, 115th supply Private Ralph Braby, 145th (Utah) field arfillery. , , ,. Private Fred W. Sanborn, 160th (California) (Cali-fornia) infantry. Private Hugh E. Burr, 114th (New Mexico) machine gun battalion. Private Charles Humphreys, bakery company No. 323. Private Frank Mitchell, 204th aero squadron, North Island. C. U Pollitt. second class electrician, naval radio station, Point Loma. "As far as we are able to learn, says the report, "these men went into the water repeatedly until completely exhausted, ex-hausted, requiring resuscitation. They showed the highest ideals of American soldiers and sailors. We feel others are entitled to recognition, but have been unable un-able to discover them, as these men are verv backward in mentioning the fact that thev took part in rescuing. We know there are several deserving men in the 115th engineers whom we have been unable to investigate." |
