P. J, Muldoon Mul-doon Is Reported to Have Been Appointed. ROCKFORD, III., March 22. Bishop P. J. Muldoon of Eockford has been appointed, ap-pointed, bishop of the Los Angeles diocese, dio-cese, "according to a cablegram from Rome. The bishop had not received official of-ficial word of the appointment tonight, but intimated that he was aware that it was to be made. "I understand that word has reached Chicago, but nothing official has come to mo regarding it, said the bishop. "Therefore, I am not prepared to discuss dis-cuss it." Friends of the bishop have been active ac-tive for several months in preparing to build a $40,000 residence for him here. The diocese has enjoyed a marked growth since he became the bishop in 1008. Because of this he is loath to leave. Bishop Muldoon was one of the three bishops who were chosen for consideration considera-tion some time ago when the Los Angeles- bishopric was to be filled. Auxiliary Aux-iliary Bishop McCourt of Philadelphia was appointed. Qn account of the illness ill-ness of the archbishop of Philadelphia, Bishop McCourt did not accept. Bishop Muldoon is a native of California, Cali-fornia, and if he accepts he will go to the state which was not only his birthplace, birth-place, but where he received his education. educa-tion. Ho is 54 years of age. He was assistant priest at St. Pius, Chicago, became chancellor of Chicago diocese, secretary to the late Archbishop Fee-han Fee-han and was parish priest of St. Charles Borromeo, Chicago, before coming to Rockford. |
