Show DUTCH STEAMER WITH AMERICANS ABOARD IS SUNK By International News Service. WASHINGTON, March 22. The sinking of a Dutch steamer with Americans aboard, by a German submarine operating outside the German barred zone, added a new gravity to tlie tense International situation tonight. Vice Consul Gerhard H. Krogh at Rotterdam reported the destruction de-struction of the American-owned tanker La Campine, in charge of an American captain, Gustav Claude, in the North sea, just oufside of the line of safety described in Germany's declaration of renewed ruth-lessness ruth-lessness at sea. Captain Claude and his crew were saved after tlie ship was destroyed de-stroyed by gunfire. Administration officials declined to comment com-ment on submarine activity In waters which have been considered safe. There was a grave apprehension, however, tlfnt it may mark tlie beginning of a general submarine campaign against the shipping of the world, wherever it may be found. It waa believed possible, however, that the incident may ha.ve been an isolated one, in which the commander of the submarine sub-marine miscalculated his location.
