Show MEMBERS OF CREW OF VIGILANCIA MAKE AFFIDAVITS WASHINGTON, March 22. -Consul Stephens at Plymouth cabled the state department today summarizing accounts of affidavits obtained by him from officers of-ficers and members of the Vigilancia 's crew. They confirm practically without change previous accounts of the destruction destruc-tion of that ship by a submarine. ''The "Vigilancia was sunk in seven minutes," says the statement, "when 145 miles west of Bishops, on March 16, 10 a. m by torpedo from submarine of unknown nationality. Periscope of submarine sub-marine was seen. No warning was given. No other vessel was iu sight. Weather was clear, with moderate sea swells. Ship was flying ensign and fully marked. "Fifteen of the crew were drowned. Six Americans, five Spaniards, two Greeks, one Persian, one Venezuelan. "Submarine of unknown nationality followed lifeboats from ten o'clock Friday Fri-day night until 4 o'clock Saturday morning. Crew landed Scillv islands after fifty-four hours in lifeboats and suffered greatly from, injury and exposure." |
