Show 1 NOTES Of "U" "Tests of Brick, Bulletin No. 1. of the State School of Mines," is the title of a pamphlet which appeared last week at the Stato university. As the title implies, this is the first of a series of bulletins to bo issued by tho authorities authori-ties of the School of Mines during the coming 3'car. The idea is to put before the general public in a clear and precise pre-cise wa3' results of practical tests made at the university. There is a variety of expensivo apparatus at the school which is not to be found anywhere else in the country. Experiments and tests of practical value arc to bo made and the public giveu tho advantage of the conclusions con-clusions drawn. to - ir This first pamphlet is of interest to evoo' brick mason and contractor in Utah, giving as it does completo data showing the strong and weak points of every kind of brick on the local market. mar-ket. Samples were obtained of the different varieties and a series of tests carried out. to determine the compressive, com-pressive, transverse and shearing strength, the weathering qualities and the chemical composition of each. In summing up. the bulletin sn3's: ".It is well known that Utah contains a great deal of good building brick clay, and paving brick clay, and the manufacturers manufactu-rers Tan and do furnish an excellent product, but a careful examination of these results and a comparison with other results ought to inspire a still closer scrutiny of methods of manufacturing manufac-turing and burning, so that a still better bet-ter product will be offered. ' ' The work of the present bulletin was done by Joseph Hunter and Oscar A. Peterson, graduates of last year's engi-neeriu" engi-neeriu" class. Prof. E. 11. Beckstrand and Prof. Frank C. French directeU the students and Kenneth Williams of tho chfinistry department made the chemical chem-ical analyses.
