Show BUSINESS AND TRADE. "The past week in business circles has ha'd a double livening up. First, wo had the conferenco, with the gratifying trado it always brings, and a trade which is alwa3's welcomo in Salt Lake. Every one makes it a point to treat tho conference visitors with great consideration, consider-ation, and to do everything possible for their comfort and pleasure. Thoy see tho sights, the3' take in the amusements, they examine the stocks of goods, and they do a good deal of trading. It is natural that they should trade a good deal here, because here is offered them a large variety of choice, with much merchandise on view, the like of which they do not see in their settlements, and that it would not paj- to keep iu the average settlement. The result is that thero is a great deal of buying, to the mutual advantage of the bii3'er and tho seller. And it is all mutually profitable profit-able to Salt Lako aud advantageous to the conferenco visitors. The State Fair was also another star attraction of the week. It was a great fair. The exhibits of peaches, grapes, apples, 'and of fruit general', was very splendid. Nothing so extensive and striking was ever seen here before, and nothing but a favorable j'ear for the fruit raisers could have brought out such a magnificent showing as was made. Salt Lake, county was especiallj-prominent especiallj-prominent in this exhibit. Another gTcat exhibit was that of the Agricultural College aud the products of the dry farms, under the management manage-ment of tho professors of that college. This showing was one to awaken the widest and most intense interest; and the fixing of a species of wheat eminently emi-nently suitable for dr3F farming seed, appears to be an established fact. If so, all the cost and troublo of tho dry farming operations will be IUII3 requited re-quited iu that one seed. But in all lines of agricultural yield the exhibit of the dry 'farming products was hipchly instructive and encouraging. Naturally tho events referred to above gave a great impetus to the local lo-cal trade of tho city. It has been a week of great things in this line. There is, besides, a constant gain in local trado by reason of the increased population popu-lation that is swanning in by the thousands, thou-sands, and making this cit3' the great metropolis of all the west mountain country. Tho markets arc generopsJ' supplied, both iu abundanco of products, aud in quality and variot3 The building operations of the year continue in full force with the splendid, splen-did, mild, weather, and the year will unquestionably be the great record breaker in the building line for Salt Lake. The proof which the extensive building furuishes of the growth of the city is found in the fact that in spite of the hundreds of new dwelling places put up this 3rear, thero is still a dearth and greater 'call thau can be supplied; all of tho old buildings, as well as the new, being full3' occupied, and still calls for more. The real estate market is firm, with good sales constant' reported, some of great importance. The realty men of tho cit3' arc able to show to cver3r inquiring or prospective investor that investment in Salt Lake realt3' is as safe as mone3' in the bank, and sure to be quite as profitable and often to be immensely more so. Wc have here a city that is bound to be one of the 1 great metropolitan centers of this countrj-, -with a wide area in overy 1 W rection contributary to it. And inj M that vast circle of a thousand miles 1 diameter there is no placo or opp0 tunity for a great city except at gjj pt Lake. And here the great metropol f, of all this region is already cetal1' lished, and is bound to wax greater aiJW greater as time goes on. The mines of the State all have the'rj! clearances and 'transactions through Salt Lake City business agencies. ThW 1 business amounts to $50,000,000 a yea?! Tbl smelter has been promised, and thorfS w no aoubt of the fulfillment of tha1 raimn2 industry has raW? nnl?randly 6inco ih0 depression at opewns ot the year, and will show vear 11 as good results thfi , irnrLf l' tllG mctaI mininV XloTo. ValUed " than $5& flf:Ss - - soo I'"5 Iu the country at large, the hantS' clearances showed a slight gain for thV' past week over tho corresponding wecF last 3'ear. From now on wb may pect to see large increases this y$! oyer the clearances of last year bV cause about this time of tho yeartf'' when the panic began to restrict tb bank clearances all through tho count-rV- General trado reports are irregula but on the average thoy lend to provtf sustained; though gradual, gain in tfc volume and value of business. T? v heavy marketing of crops hus largely itf8 creased railway tonnage, and alrcad'S called into activity moro than half oft the unused cars. The exportB of whoa' are heavy, and the late harvesting ,Jj being completed. Production is ijJJ croasing in irou and steel in nnticipa tion of forthcoming business. There less industrial idloueas, and there lift noteworthy activity in shoes, lumbo'! and pig iron. Dun reports substantial progress toward industrial recovery du-ring du-ring the past week by a large numbajV of wage-earners resuming' work in millf and factories that had been whoUyljL partially idle for many, many motith! Resumption, however, is by no meai$ uniform, many undertakings being daPr ferred until after election. Contract! for finished steel are restricted to cu" rent needs, but a large tonnage is unl der negotiation. ( 'W. Tn finances the noteworthy thing o the timo is the continued plethora ot' moue3', with small disposition to invest' it in slocks. The slock market takct alarm easily, and oven the little Euro)! pean "war cloud," so called, is Buff ficicnt to paralyze the market. On th whole, however, tho condition of thV country is as satisfactory as could "b. expected. And with the turmoil of tblt Presidential election over, which ij will bo now in a little more than thre.i weeks, there is no reason to doubt A substantial acceleration in tho main toj wards the old-time progress and proal perity. .if |
