There was a lively little squabble at Monday evening's session of the City Council over tho ordinance amending the franchise of the Kooky Mountain Boll lelephone company, the amendment providing for tho payment to the city ol 1 per cent of the gross earnings of tho company and the furnishing of forty free telephones in lieu of a license tax-. When the matter was taken up under tho head of unfinished business President Presi-dent pro tern Black announced that the matter would go over for one week if there was no objection, and, no objection ob-jection being mado, it supposedly went over. No sooner had the order been made, howovor, than Mr. Stewart raised an objection and moved that tho ordinance bo taken up. Mr. Black hold that it had gone over and Mr. Stewart appealed from the decision of the chair, but the appeal was lost. t In tho meantime Mr. Stewart criticised criti-cised Mr. Black for taking tho matter up during his (Stewart's) and Mr. O'Donnell's absence, tho matter having been referred to the municipal laws and licenso committees, but reported upon only by tho former committee. Mr. Black retorted that he could not wait all summer and that a majority of the council was present at the committee com-mittee meeting when the matter was decided upon. This ended the discus-siou. |
