SOHROEDER-ROBERTS DEBATE. Readers of Tho Tribuno will remember remem-ber that Boino months ago wo printed a series of articles from Mr. Theodore Schrocdcr of Now York, formerly of this city, on tho origin of the Book of Mormon. On tho appearance of those articles, Elder B. If. Roberts wroto to The Tribuno requesting the privilege of replying to them. lie was reforred to tho American Historical Magazine, which publication first printed tho Schroeder articles, and from which The Tribune was permitted to copy. It was suggested to Mr. Roberts that his best course would bo to havo his reply printed print-ed iu tho American Historical Maga zine, and that Mr. Schrocdcr would no doubt ask tho privilege of a rejoinder. Elder Roberts accopted tho suggestion, sugges-tion, wroto to the American Historical Magazino, aud obtained tho opportunity to reply to Mr. Schrocdcr in its pages. Accordingly, that magazine announces in its issue of July that the publication of Elder Roberts's reply to Mr. Schrooder will begin in its September number. Tho editor of tho American Historical Magazine statos in this connection con-nection that "tho papers of Mr. Roberts Rob-erts derive special interest and importance impor-tance from tlio fact that they aro the work of a leading mombor of the church, and they arc, in substance, official of-ficial in character;" and that "they will bo accopted, as thej' aro undoubtedly undoubt-edly intended, as tho answer of tho Mormon church to tho proscnt-day criticism criti-cism of those who antagonize it." On this point it is conceded that in this respect re-spect the series of articles will bo "considered "con-sidered an exceedingly valuable contribution con-tribution to contemporaneous historical literature, and should attract widespread wide-spread attention, both among those who aro opponents of tho Mormon church aud tho?o who are its supporters." With these opinions of tho editor of the Anion can Historical Magazine, Tho Tribune is in substantial agreement. There has been so much said with respect re-spect to tho origin of the Book of Mormon Mor-mon without any absolutely definite determination de-termination of that origin, that tho public which is interested in this question ques-tion will no doubt take a deep interest in the present discussion as presented. Wo shall look with interest to Elder Roberts's reply, and with even more interest in-terest to Mr. Schroodor's rejoinder to that reply. For w;c havo no doubt whatever but that Mr. Schroeder will bo able perfectly to make good his position po-sition as laid down in tho articles heretofore here-tofore printed in tho magazine referred to, and reproduced in the columns of Tho Tribune. |
