Across the continent with a woman at the wheel the entire distance and at an operating expense of $70 are two Interesting Inter-esting facts of a tour just completed by Mr. and Mrs. 'Charles N. Otto and family fam-ily of Los Angeles. Mrs. Otto, an enthusiastic motorist, drove all the way and the others In the party were Mr. Otto, a son, Raymond; a daughter, Ardelle, and George H. Wise, 75 years of age. weeks and three days was consumed in making the run to Boston, where the party checked In at the New England KisselKar branch. The trip from the coast was made over the southern route, from California to Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana. Ohio, New York and thence to Boston. The party was four days crossing the great American Amer-ican desert, during which a severe sandstorm sand-storm was encountered. This happened near Flagstaff, and the KisselKar and two other cars were tied together and covered with canvas to protect pro-tect the paint while the storm was raging. rag-ing. Through the entire trip the party camped out, using their own tent for this purpose. No hotel bills for rooms were paid en route. There was likewise no garage expense on the entire trip, though supplies were costly in some places. As high as $2 a gallon was paid for oil and 40 cents a gallon was the high limit for gasoline. An interesting Incident of the trip was t lie taking of a bottle of water from the Pacific ocean at San Diego and placing this water in the Atlantic ocean at the Charlestown navy yard. This little ceremony cere-mony was attended to by Mr. Wise. This was Mr. Wise's first trip to Boston, the place of his birth, since he left there to make his fortune in California many years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Otto were formerly residents resi-dents of South Natlck, Mass., and while on their eastern trip will visit relatives and friends in that section of the country. |
