IN times gone by the Pacific Coast league has sent many a ball player to the major leagues. A lot of them are still there, and not a few of them are shining stars. Last year fourteen went up, only one of whom returned. The others are making good. Seeently another has gone up in the person of Harold Elliott. v This year's crop of Coasters for the big show appears less promising, yet there will be several names absent from the Coast lea.gue box scores next season which will be found in the majors. Among those who are regarded as certain of elevation are: Louie Guisto, first baBeman, Portland, who is wanted by eight or ten clubs: Charley (Swede) Eisberg, Vernon second baseman, who is slated for the White Sox; Ping Bodie, San hrancisco outfielder, who is scheduled for the St. Louis Cardinals; Pitcher Johnny Couch, San Francisco pitcher, who is a likely Detroit American; Elliott (Speed) Martin, Oakland pitcher, who seems certain to be in demand; Paul Fittery, Salt Lake pitcher, who will probably be snared by some club; Marty McGaffigan, Vernon shortstop, upon whom the St. Louis Cardinals are casting longing eyes. There has been a good deal of writing about Tommy Quinlan again stepping under the big top. Edward (Tub) Spencer, Vernon catcher, is also among the possible ones to be called, and Bunny Brief may get another chance iu higher company. Many Coasters Up There. The Coast league has been very prolific as a producer of big league talent. At least 110 can be named readily who went from this circuit to the majors, and most of them by the direct route of draft, sale or trade. Doubtless a complete com-plete list would increase the number by twenty or more. Thirty-nine of these are still in fast company, while comparatively few have dropped below the Class AA circle. Sixteen have returned and donned the spangles of the Pacific Coast league. Some of them, of course, lasted quick, but taken altogether their average major league life was in the neighborhood of three years, or will be when the later men sent up have completed their terms. This means that a majority of them made good. Portland really has the edge in the matter of baring developed players. MeCredie, with thirty-three, has sent up more than any other club, and a comfortable majority qualified in fast company. Probably the most notable contributions were Mike Mitchell, Dave Bancroft, Roger Peckinnaugh, Jack Graney, Vean Gregg, Tom Seaton, Charley Sweeney and Larry McLean. Los Angeles ranks second with twenty-eight. However, some of the men listed, like Dillon, Waddell and Newton, were bona-fide major leaguers before joining the Angels. Among Los Angeles' contributions were' Hal Chase, Cactus Cravath, Hi Jasper, Zeb Terry and Fred McMullen. Oakland has not been remiss. George Cutshaw, who was developed by Wolverton when he had the Oaks, is now given a rating as the best second baseman base-man in tho National league. San Francisco has contributed several players of real worth, ofwhom Oscar Vitt and Buck Weaver loom the best in point of service. Sacramento, no longer on the baseball map, sent up a flock of good men while Fresno can claim the distinction of having contributed Harry WoUer during its brief sojourn in the league. Klepfer, Wilhoit and Agnew are the players to graduate from the Vernon club who are still there. What the List Shows.
