Accompanied by Governor Hanna of South Lakota, the Yellowstone socia-1 bility lour J'ormally dedicated the new 1 bridge over the lattie Missouri river .Monday morning, July 24, thus completing complet-ing the last link in the chain connecting tho northerly transcontinental route. At Medora, Jr. I)., the members of the tour were guests at the Roosevelt ranch and the annual wild west show and round-up then in progress held their interest with exhibitions of horsemanship, horseman-ship, rope throwing and bulldogging wild steers. Monday's route leu through the celebrated bad lands out of Dickinson. C. J. Baker of the editorial department depart-ment of the Chalmers Motor company, in charge of the Chalmers S400 r. p. m. Pathfinder for the tour, tells the story of the tour from Staples to Fargo. Despite a miniature cloudburst just before reaching Detroit, Minn., the 3400 r. p. m. Chalmers Pathfinder ushered the Yellowstone sociability tour into Fargo without mishap. With the Chalmers pilot car setting the pace an early start was made from Staples following a most cordial reception recep-tion from the citizens of that town. The weather was fine during the morning, morn-ing, but towards noon a combination hall and rainstorm pelted the tourists for the best part of an hour. Most of the drivers placed their tops in position quickly, but Dr. Erenfield, the speed king, preferred a ducking to a loss of time and brought his party into Detroit in a drenched condition. Owing to the rain a big entertainment and luncheon planned by the commerce association of Detroit tor the Yellowstone Yellow-stone tour had to be abandoned. Fearful Fear-ful of the gumbo roads between Detroit De-troit and Fargo, the party pushed on early in the afternoon. Barring one bad stretch which the Chalmers negotiated nego-tiated without difficulty, but which was decided impassable for a large number of cars, the tour was rerouted and the road from then on was on the boulevard boule-vard order. A warm welcome awaited the travelers travel-ers at Fargo, N. D. Headed by President Presi-dent W. W. Smith of the Y'ellowstone national parks highway, the Commercial club turned out strong. President Smith joined the tour at this point with his Chalmers Six. One of the most remarkable features of the tour is tho number of lady participants. par-ticipants. Mrs. Shelder and her two lady companions are rated among the best drivers in the tour. It is estimated that before the completion of the tour there will be twenty-five ladies enrolled. Chief among the features planned by the officials of the Northern Pacific is a real newspaper written, edited and printed on board the Yellowstone special. spe-cial. Cal Stedman, publicity man for the railroad, is editor of the breezy four-page four-page paper and the personal notes and accounts of each day's progress are eagerly read by all members of the party. |
