Show mm SITUATION IS Cflllffl BETTER City Supply Is Ample and Good, According1 to Report Re-port of Officials. NO SHORTAGE FEARED Sprinkling Restrictions Necessary Nec-essary Because of Persistent Persist-ent Carelessness. TIig water supply of the city is vory much better now than at tho same season sea-son last year, due partly to tho better snow supply and partly to the fact that recent showers have materially aidud, not alone in reducing consumption, but also in the prevention of such great evaporation at the sources of supply, according to water department oilicials. The city is also protected by having a reservoir of 550,000,000 gallons of water stored in tho new reservoirs above Brighton in the Cottonwood canyon. can-yon. This is expected to assure an adequate supply for the balance of the season for such portions of the city as can be reached by the supply main on Thirteenth South street and the Parley Par-ley conduit. Unfortunately little has been done toward a reservoir or greater supply for the Capitol hill district, and the north and cast benches, which are included in tho high line territory. These districts are supplied from City creek, and while the City creek stream is holding up very much better than last year, there is a possibility of some shortage during the latter end of the season in this territory. Restriction Necessary. Notwithstanding the fact that all of the supply lines during the last thirty days have been carrying their full capacity into the city, some of the districts dis-tricts have been affected by low supply. sup-ply. No part of the city, however, has been out of water, but by reason of these conditions it has been necessary to place a restriction on 'sprinkling on flat rate premises, prohibiting the sprinkling of lawns between the hours of 10 a. m. and 4 p. m. The big demand for the installation of meters is expected to have a considerable con-siderable effect in reducing the per capita consumption of water. However, the waste' of water is not all due to carclcssnoss on private premises, as several sev-eral of the city departments are among the most wasteful consumers, the officials of-ficials say. At the present time, and during the construction work of the new dam in Parley's canyon, the water from that source is not being used in supplying the city. Sanitary Condition Good. From a sanitary standpoint the situation situ-ation is considered very much better this year than last, although the conditions con-ditions in Cottonwood canyon are not thought ideal by any means, due to the fact that tremendous clouds of dust arc raised over the roads on which ore is being hauled along the Cottonwood Cotton-wood stream. . As a safety measure, however, the city commission has authorized the purchase and installation of liquid chlorine plants for the purpose of eliminating elim-inating from the supply, from both Cottonwood Cot-tonwood and Parley's canyons, any contamination which may have occurred. These plants should be in operation within the next two weeks. Taken as a whole, officials consider the situation to be very much improved and they think there is very little cause for serious alarm at the present time. |
