Show Deer Count Taken Shows About Same As In 1355 The number of deer counted this year during the annual survey east and west of the' Golden Stairs road in western Duchesne County was very similar to the 195'5 count, reports Dave Thomas, District Dis-trict No. 2 warden. During the latter part of March, the four-day count made by. jeep, a foot and on horseback, tallied a total of 996 deer in this area, which is surveyed each year about the same time. Last year, the count was 1,011, but the count was continued fartheT up Red Creek than it was this year, Mr. Thomas explained. This count indicated in-dicated that the herds in this area have not fluctuated in numbers to any extent the past year. Fish and Game Department officials of-ficials participating in the' survey were: Mr. Thomas, Fred Reynolds, Lynn NickeU, Udell Gardner, and Lloyd Stevens. Duchesne District Forest Ranger Merlin I. Bishop assisted with the count; and Walter Wal-ter Nelson, government trapper at Duchesne, joined the officials for part of the survey. The count was made from Duchesne Du-chesne west to Currant Creek, Tabby Mountain, Red Creek, Avin-taquin Avin-taquin and Sam's Canyon. Range' conditions were found to be good, Mr. Thomas reported. The sage brush was in extra good condition in most areas. Some of the browse had been eaten. Very little of the important browse plants were found to be in lower vigor because, of overuse. A deer count from an airplane is being planned in higher elevations eleva-tions of this area May 1, Mr. I Thomas said. This type survey is made annually, also. |
