Show CARE OF THE REFRIGERATOR sJKP&W$mr& ilk BY MRS. McCUNB. g?3 HE caro of tho refrigerator Is H most important Ice Is not a Es5H cleanly product in spito of its crystal clearness. It collects dust and germs In its travels. If It is not possiblo to wash it on tho back porch, set It In the sink and dash cold water over it so that it may go into the box as clean as possible. Remember Remem-ber that it is a saving to keep tho ice chamber full. A good, big piece three times a week is much more economical, econom-ical, both in regard to the degree of coldness maintained and tho amount of ice required, than a piece every day. Never put foods in the Ico chamber. It is tho very warmest part of the refrigerator, and tho presence pres-ence of food, either lying upon or standing against the ico, causes It to melt moro rapidly. The only exception except-ion to this rule may bo In the case of a vcgetablo which is wanted very crisp, aB salad, etc ; then wo must accept ac-cept tho extra melting. Very carefully careful-ly wash the lettuco or parsley, cres3 or celery, wrap it in oiled paper and lay on tho Ico for a couplo of hours Tho question of odors is a difficult one to deal with In hot weather. So many housekeepers complain thnt no matter how careful they may bo thero is always a httlo odor in tho refrigerator. refrig-erator. Bo careful of tho food you put in; for instance, cucumbers havo a very decided and penetrating odor, and thero is nothing In the world worse than a cantaloupe to "smell up" an Icebox. If there 1b no cool closet or window box available, put the odoriferous odor-iferous foods into cracked Ico for a short time before serving and they may bo mado deliciously cool. Som'etlmes tiny insects get into an icebox and cause no end of annoyance. annoy-ance. If the shelves are portable tako them out, wash thoroughly in hot soda water, rinse in a strong solution solu-tion of borax, and do not wipe. Allow them to dry in the sun. This will leavo a borax dust on tho shelves; treat tho interior of the box in tho same way, and when thoroughly dry, sprinkle a little borax over the shelves and bottom beforo putting tho food in and closing up. Charcoal has been spoken of as a disinfectant, and a pleco should always bo kept In the food compartment It mav bo changed every other week. flSBr m$&- Wis. mk Dampen Me ? ""J , J ''"' X -''dm |
