Show GOETHALS MAKES STRONGAPPEAL Wants Money and Authority to Go on With Program of vShip Building. NEW YORK, May 25 Major General Gen-eral George W. Goethals, speaking informally in-formally tonight at the annual dinner here of the Iron and Steel Institute, declared that tho proposal to build 1000 3000-ton wooden ships in eighteen months "Ib simply hopeless." For that reason, he said, it had becomo necessary neces-sary to turn to steel as well as wood. "I have asked for legislation to prevent pre-vent the laying down of ships for anyone but us. I want to enlist the co-operation and assistance of the 'structural steel people. I have got to have tho co-operation of manufacturers, manufactur-ers, makers of machinery, chains, wire cables, In fact, everything that goes to make tho complete ship; and, if what Lloyd George said is true, that ships are going to win the war, everybody every-body who helps build ships will holp win tho war." |
