PAItOW.W - Parowan Chapter of UAW held a meeting recently with Superintendent J. Clair Morris and Bruce Decker, director of special projects for Iron County Schools as guest speakers. Mrs. Marie Green was in charge of the meeting sponsored by UAW and high school and elementary ITAs. Mr. Morris spoke to the group on the Iron County School Budget and School Equalization plan. He stated that Utah is a leader in the system the state financial system assures that all counties are the same. $7!r.0() per student and the same mill levy 2K mills for maintenance and operation of schools the legislature allocates the balance of the money. This is not financed by property taxes alone, Ii8 percent is local money and (7 percent the unified school fund or income tax. Mr. Morris stated that no single form of tax should be burdened bur-dened with the support of education. In Utah we educate further fur-ther on less money. Salaries are a consideration in this. A Bond was let to pay for the addition on the Parowan High School and the money awarded to pay for it. Iron County had more students this year and therefore was considered a richer county and received less from the state funds. This made it impossible to go ahead with the proposed addition on the Parowan Elementary School this year. Mr. Morris stated that he feels the new classrooms can be built next year. He gave a very comprehensive explanation of the financial status of the Iron County Schools and answered many questions for the parents present at the meeting. Mr. Bruce Decker, gave a brief talk on title nine and what it means to Utah. He told the group in attendance that Title Nine is a federal law that we must comply with. We do not get extra funds because of it, but if we did not comply we would lose federal funds, 5 percent of school financing is federal funds and we would lose the school lunch program that is federally financeced. |
