Show Allergies-Medicine present Problems Allergies are a problem at any time; but for the pregnant female they are especially troublesome since it is dangerous to take medicine of any kind during pregnancy. The American College of Physicians indicates that the physician is put on the spot when the expectant mother needs relief for an allergy. He must decide which (the allergy or the medication) might be more hazardous to the mother and fetus. For example, asthma itself can pose risks to both mother and child. It is the consensus though that "during the first trimester of prenancy, no medication should be given unless absolutely essential."
