In the oral interpretation of literature, Jennifer Riggs placed third and Appel Tuxhorn broke into the finalist rounds. Both SUSC coeds are freshmen from Bingham High. Kayron Madson, another freshman from Bingham, received second place in after-dinner speaking. Madson also received a first place trophy in expository ex-pository speaking. Another SUSC team member, Howard Davis, received second place in the same contest. Vickie Green received additional honors for a first place tie in extemporaneous speaking. In the same contest, Chris Kereceman placed third and Craig LeDuc and Jan Merrill broke into finalist rounds. Coach Smith reports that the forensics team is looking forward to their next major tournament, the Pikes Peak Invitational, which will be held October 26-28 at The Southern Utah State College forensics squad captured another "first" last weekend at the Mesa Madcap Tournament held in Grand Junction, Colorado. SUSC piled up enough points to capture the sweepstakes trophy at the tournament. Their 101 points outdistanced their closest competitor, College of Eastern Oregon, by 40 points, i In their first tournament this year, the T-Bird squad placed four teams in finalist positions at the University of Utah Fall Scrimmage. "It was a total squad victory at Mesa College with all 14 SUSC entries winning points towards the sweepstakes sweep-stakes award," SUSC debate coach M.L. Smith, said. The Southern Utah State team won the trophy-and ten others--in competition against schools from Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, California and Utah. Debaters Vickie Green and Howard Davis won a second place trophy in debate. Jan Merrill and Lisa Kay tied for third place with another SUSC team, Frank Misak and Craig LeDuc, while still another T-Bird team, Chris Kereceman and John Peterson won second place in the semi-finalist round. The winning debaters are all SUSC freshmen with the exception of LeDuc who is a sophomore. Kereceman is a graduate of Orem High School, the others are Bingham High graduates. Freshman Cara Thorup, |
