Show Suggestions on Energy Management The publication "Energy Management" makes the following suggestions to save energy in your home. 1. Keep your fireplace damper closed except when you have a fire burning. An open damper can let up to 8 percent of your heat escape up your chimney. 2. Insulate you attic access door. Check the door to make sure that it is well insulated and weather-stripped weather-stripped - cold air can easily seep into your house thorugh this source. 3. Insulate hot water pipes and ducts in unheated areas. 4. Repair leaky faucets promptly. One drop a second can waste as much as 60 gallons of hot or cold water in a week. 5. Insulate your water heater if it's warm or hot to touch. When you insulate be sure not to block needed air vents, especially with oil and gas water heaters. Insulation In-sulation kits are available and should save about $15 a year in energy costs. 6. Check the water temperature tem-perature on your hot water heater. Many water heaters are set too high. Setting of 120 degrees F. will provide adequate hot water for most families. If you have a dish- washer you may want to set your temperature at 140 degrees F. 7. Set your thermostat at the minimum comfort setting in winter and add a ."Fuel Sentry for overnight control. 8. Open registers fully, and close them in unused rooms. To insure proper air circulation, cir-culation, make sure that registers and returns are not obstructed. 9. Insulate ductwork in unheated spaces. In winter, humidify for comfort and in summer ventilate excess moisture to reduce the cooling load. Whole house forced ventilation adds comfort and saves energy. |
