Show LBMw Corner I'V ""'. ' Y' by David Hazard Mention white buck shoes to any movie, music or TV fa.i and you get the response, "Pat Boone." But mention the name "Boone" and more than likely you'll get a rendition of 'You Light Up My Life,' the smash hit song by the Boone's third daughter Debby. While the Boones have always been noted for their wholesome family appeal, Debby told 'Pat' Robertson, host ; of the Christian Broadcasting Network's internationally : syndicated program 'The 700 Club,' that things were not : always so rosy between the upcoming star and her . parents. . . ,, "I got really rebellious when I was about 13 or 14, Debby (pictured with her father) admitted. There was a great deal of peer pressure and I was trying to develop : and establish my own identity. My parents were pretty . restrictive. Every one of my friends was allowed to do ; things I wasn't allowed to do." : "At one time, I decided to completely withdraw from ; my parents. So I shut myself off from giving or receiving : any love. It got so bad that I didn't want either of my : parents to even touch me, and I would wince if they ; tnedPat Boone, who shared 'The 700 Club' spotlight with Debby said, "In some ways, I think I was too ; stnctespecially in things like makeup and dating. I : almost fostered rebellion." Pat and Shirley Boone are the ; authors of a book on child rearing entitled 'The Honeymoon Is Over.' Debby's dilemma was based mainly on the fact that she was an "individualist" in a strong Christian family. "I fought being like other people. And I fought my parents dedication because I wanted to be sure it was real myself to make my own decisions. So when I committed myself to the Lord it was real, and it meant everything to me," she beamed. Now Debby's commitment takes in all facets of her life. Especially the singing of 'You Light Up My Life,' which has sold over 4-and-a-half-million copies. "I sang it to Jesus and still do," she affirmed. "In the Bible, He is constantly being referred to as the Might. I just can't sing the song without thinking of Him." Debby says she is still "overwhelmed" by the success of 'You Light Up My Life.' "It was released last September (1977) and by October everything in my life had changed." And though she has sung the song possibly . thousands of times since then, she has not tired of it. "Vocally it's a very difficult song and after singing it again and again on a tour it gets very wearing. But I feel lots of emotion when I sing because I always draw on things inside of me and put it all into the song." 'You Took My Heart By Surprise' was Debby s follow-up single to her first platinum release. But there is more than singing in her future. The whole Boone family will do a Thanksgiving special for television and she will play the female lead in a Christmas special for TV based on 0 Henry's 'Gift of the Magi.' "If all goes well, Debby ; says with a sparkle in her eye, "I hope to try movies." Although Debby is the only Boone daughter to choose entertainment as her career, all four girls record. Their first album 'The Boone's First Class,' is the number one selling Gospel LP. Of her solo career, Debby said, "My sisters : have really been wonderful about it. They all knew I was going to pursue a solo career eventually, though we were ; all surprised by the suddenness of the whole thing. They .. really support me all the way." , And for a family as tight knit as the Boone s, that support is all but expected. TV C0MPUI0G SFRVICrs iwc J |
