In a non-league encounter the Redmen dominated action in shutting out Lehi by a score of 35-0 in the biggest offensive show of the season for Coach Jim Dalton and the Redmen. This week it will be surprisingly sur-prisingly tough Tigers of Payson who will be challenged by the Redmen in a game slated Friday evening at 7:30 at Payson. The Lions are one of the strong contenders in the Region Six battle this year after they were predicted to be one of the weaker teams. They are coming off a victory vic-tory over the Dixie Flyers at St. George this past week. For the Redmen Coach Dalton will be looking for a little more offense. "We were extremely pleased with the showing last week against a tough Lehi " he said. "During the second half of play we opened up the game a bit and it was effective," he added. During the second half the Redmen went to the air with quarterback David Carter connecting on 6 of 12 passes for a total of 95 yards. Scott Henderson, was on the reception end of a number of those passes. Frank Thorley again continued to be the top ground gainer for the Redmen as he ran for two touchdowns "and the offensive of-fensive blocking was excellent, ex-cellent, "Dalton indicated. "We realize that Payson may be a strong team, but we feel that fundamentally we improve each week. The attitude is good and we feel that the crew is ready for this one,"' Dalton said. There were a lot of positive things happening for Cedar High in the victory over Lehi. "We were ex-pecially ex-pecially proud of the offensive of-fensive line for their play throughout the contest," the STRONG DEFENSE. The Cedar High School Redmen remained tough in this action against Lehi last week. Redmen won the game by a score of 35-0. Here runner John Geyerman No. 35 of Lehi is swarmed under by a host of Redmen including Mark Jones 11, who makes the initial contact. Those are key defensive efforts. Offensively we will go with the basic game plan that we used against Lehi, although we may come out throwing the ball earlier in the game. We feel that we gained good confidence in our passing game against Lehi," he said.. Two of the reasons for the confidence were in receptions recep-tions by juniors Henderson and Alan Cardon. "They have shown remarkable improvement, " Dalton said. coach indicated. Rock Lopour, Craig Embley, Cary Chamberlain, Gary Gregersen and Kendall Benson make up the front wall. "It was much to their effort that we were able to rush for over 200 yards against a larger Lehi defense, " Coach Dalton said. Also singled out for his outstanding effort was Brad Slaugh. "He has great natural ability and is the best blocker I have ever coached," Dalton said. His teammates refer to him as the lumber jack because of the way he chops down the opponents. Kevin Webb, a junior, had a fine game as a running back as did Thorley. As for the Payson Lions "they have been much tougher than anyone thought,"DaIton said. The scouting report indicated that the Payson line is big physically, but that the key to their success is the execution of the skilled positions. They have good running backs and receivers. They work from a veer offense and like to use a lot of counter actions. The play action pass has been successful for the Tigers, Dalton said. Against the Flyers last week a quick slant pass was good for 77 yards and a TD..A turnover late in the game gave the Tigers an opportunity to score to come from behind to defeat the Flyers 25-20 What we hope to do is to stop them at the line and defend against the slant pass. |
