Show AFTER BRIEF CEREMONIES Little Leaguers Begin Season Play Cedar City Little League got off to a flying start Monday afternoon af-ternoon when all of the participating partici-pating boys in the program marched down Cedar City Main Street to the Little League park. A flag raising ceremony was held before the umpire called out the first "Play Ball" of the season and the Lions and Elks Club teams teed off in the initial init-ial game of the current season. With three games already over the board each of the six participating parti-cipating teams has played one game. Naturally three have won and three have lost but first indications indi-cations are that the league will be tight and most observers will find it difficult to pick a winner at the outset. Behind some excellent pitching pitch-ing by Leigh Rosenberg, the Lions came up with a 5 to 2 vie- -'-! "I" 'I "i , . mi. minium n tory to win the opener over the Elks Rulers Monday evening. Tuesday evening the Rotary Rangers ran roughshod over the Columbia Miners in a 13 to 1 contest. The one run for the Columbia Co-lumbia team came in the late innings to rob Sam Chamberlain of a no run game. Wednesday evening the Kiwa-nis Kiwa-nis Kubs and the Milne Truckers Truck-ers played into the first extra inning of the season. Milne won out in the extra Inning after trailing 1 to 0 from the third inning inn-ing to the sixth. Melvin Clark, the first man to draw a walk off Lory' Misel of the Kiwanis, went from first to home on an overthrow over-throw and error to second base in the bottom half of the sixth inning to force the game into the extra inning. Misel scored 17 J L I - JUM. Mil 11. .II-W.JLI .1 .11.1.111 ' "II IH. strikeouts in order and allowed only one hit and one walk. The 18th put-out for the Kiwanis Kubs was the first field put-out play for the team. Larry Anderson on the mound for Milne also pitched pitch-ed an excellent game and with some good fielding behind him the Truckers pulled out a victory in what looked like a shut-out. Clyde Higbee, president of the Little League, announced this week that scorers for the season sea-son will be Mrs. Wesley Thompson Thomp-son and Mrs. Ad Anderson. They have consented to help the league and keep the books for the year, for their contribution to the worthwhile program, Higbee Hig-bee said. |
