As the name implies, it has white flowers and a patch in bloom gives a snowy-white appearance. ap-pearance. This weed produces reddish-brown seeds which resemble re-semble radish seeds and are about the same size as alfalfa seeds, making it difficult to clean from alfalfa or clover. It makes its growth early in the spring and flowers in the latter part of April or early May, depending de-pending upon the season and amiuae. Occurrence White Top was Introduced into the United States about 50 years ago and is now extremely widespread. wide-spread. It is a problem in every county in Utah, is considered a serious problem in 24 counties, and is the most serious weed present in many of the counties. It occurs in cultivated fields and waste places, particularly thriving thriv-ing on somewhat saline soils. There are some small patches in Cedar Valley and a little occuring in Parowan Valley. Val-ley. A patch is growing in Hamlin Ham-lin Valley at the old town of State Line, with a very small patch occurring along the highway high-way between Beryl Junction and Modena. The County Agenl would appreciate It if you would report any new infestations ol White Top that appear in the county. Control White top has been and car be controlled by clean cultiva-j tion. To be successful, this must' be done thoroughly every two or three weeks during the growing , season and will take two orj three years. A more practical method" consists of a combination of cropping and chemicals. For example., White Top on crop land has been effectively , controlled by the following procedure: Plow the land early in the spring and prepare a good seedbed. This sets the weed back. Apply about 40 pound available nitrogen per acre and seed Immediately to grain. The fertilizer will help the grain crop to grow rapidly and provide competition to the weed. Spray with 1M pounds of 2,4-D per acre when the grain is be- ttween the stooling and booting ' stage. After the crop is harvested plow and cultivate or spray with 2. 4-D as fall growth appears This program should be followed" as long as is necessary, probably probab-ly three or four years for complete com-plete control. |
