Running is a great endurance endur-ance exercise, but it is not a complete exercise program. People who limit themselves to running tend to become stiff and inflexible, with short, tight muscles in the back and in the backs of the legs. They also may lack muscle tone and strength in the trunk and upper body. These conditions, according to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, "can lead to poor posture and chronic lower back pain, a condition that partially cripples or disables thousands of middle aged and older Americans." The stretching exercises you do before and after running will give you needed flexibility. In addition, addi-tion, you should do some strength exercises, such as pushups and bent-knee sit-ups, sit-ups, to give your fitness regimen proper balance.
