Show STRAIGHT TALK Teeth , A PUBLIC SERVICE OF . THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTISTS a ADULTS . . . BRACE THEMSELVES For years many adult Americans were afraid of having "metal mouth." They wanted to "Go Straight," but never realized that orthodontic braces aren't just for the Donny , Osmond fan club anymore. Increasingly, adults in their mid-20's through 60's are ignoring the jokes, fears and embarrassment long associated as-sociated with orthodontics. Their goal is a warm smile from a healthy mouth. A recent survey by The American Association of Orthodontists shows that nearly one-sixth of all orthodontic patients were over 18 years old. The number is growing. There are several reasons for this increase. One is basic dental health. Crowded and crooked teeth are hard to keep clean. Daily brushing and flossing are vital in preventing tooth decay, gum disease and even tooth loss. As people live longer they're willing to take steps to keep their teeth for life. Finally, adults are learning that tooth straightening can be done at any age. Technical Tech-nical advances such as new adhesives allow braces to be bonded directly to the teeth. This does away with much of the metal look in braces. Even with inflation, the cost of orthodontic care has risen far less than most items. Thirty years ago there was little difference between the price of braces and a new Ford or Chevy. Today, the new Ford or Chevy costs several times as much. If you'd like to learn more about adult orthodontics . . . The American Association Associa-tion of Orthodontists has a free booklet for you entitled: en-titled: "There's Still Time."
