SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 30. A gigantic gi-gantic opium smuggling plot in which federal officials, steamship employees and Chinese aro all involved, dovolopod today i with nearly a score o arrests. Tho opium ring has beon operated at this port since August, 1910, and Surveyor Sur-veyor of tho Port Justus S. Wardoll estimates their profits at closo upon $500,000. m a The first intimation that Wardell received re-ceived camo when he assumed his du-tios du-tios two weeks ago. Deputy Surveyor Charles A. Stephens reported that Maximilian Max-imilian Miller, a custom guard undor suspension for opium smuggling, had intimatod that othor guards besides himself were in tho opium ring. This started tho investigation that resulted in wholesale arrests. t Several- of thoso under arrest are said to havo made complete confessions.
