Show Division For The Blind Has Library Facilities FARMINGTON - Individuals In-dividuals who cannot read or use conventional printed materials because of physical limitation have access to library service through the Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. SINCE APRIL 1974, the Utah State Library Commission Commis-sion has been acting as a Multi-State Center for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Han-dicapped, serving 15 western states. The Utah center is currently one of two multi-state multi-state centers in the United States. The free services offered of-fered through the division open the world of books through sound, touch and sight. One service offered is radio information. Since January 1976, the Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped Han-dicapped has been broadcasting broadcast-ing special programs for their patrons over KBYU-FM. This particular frequency band of KBYU-FM can be received through a specially tuned receiver available free to library patrons who qualify. THREE DAILY newspapers are read daily over the radio. Emphasis is placed on local news, syndicated columns, obituaries and grocery and shopping advertisements. Old-time radio dramas and occasional book reading are other features. The Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped is currently using six to seven -hours of air time daily with a future capacity of up to 18 hours. BOOKS AND most major periodicals with wide popular appeal are produced regularly on Braille presses by nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. Copies are sent to the division for distribution. Special requests for titles normally having limited circulation, such as specialized textbooks, can be hand-produced by volunteer transcribers at the division. Talking books on records, cassette books, books on open reel tapes and large print books are among the other items available. If any patron needs a book not currently in the library's collection, arrangements can be made to have it reproduced in taped form or in Braille. IF A PATRON will inform the library of his reading interests, every effort will be made to acquire the books he desires. To qualify for participation in the library service, an individual in-dividual should secure a brief statement describing the specific characteristics of his disability from a competent authority such as a doctor, ophthalmologist, registered nurse, professional staff member of a hospital or other institution or agency, or, in the absence of any of these, a professional librarian. THE STATEMENT should then be submitted to the Division for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 2150 South 300 West, Suite 16, Salt Lake City, Utah 84115.
