Show VHS Soccer: Young By DAVE WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL"- For the past several years the Viewmont soccer club has won the region crown with the same team that started out a great three years as sophomores. This year however the Vikes lost the majority of last year's club to graduation and had to start over. ONLY TWO players on this year's team have played varsity var-sity soccer before this season. That meant that the Vikings had to start building their team all over again. The majority of players on this year's team are up from the junior varsity club that placed fourth in an eight team league a year ago. The Vikings are also a young team with only three seniors on the team. Twelve juniors and a couple of sophomores all see action in this year's varsity side. TO ADD to their youth movement, the Vikings lost their senior goalie Steve Klemm for a couple of weeks due to a knee injury suffered against Davis. Viewmont players are hoping hop-ing for his return in the next couple of weeks but until then the goalkeeping duties have been taken up by juniors Garth LeCheminant and Dagon Browning. Garth has the edge right now, despite this being his first year of soccer. JUNIOR Craig Cook is back at fullback as one of the two returning players from last year's region champions. Craig is the mainstay of the Viking defense. Flanking Craig are juniors Kevin Freestone, up from the junior varsity club, and Blake Court who is in his first year of playing. The other returning player is only a junior also. Royal Smith has been switched from forward to halfback to give the Vikes a stronger midfield player. Joining Royal on the halfback line are seniors Al LeCheminant and junior Brent Hagen. Al played on that JV team a year ago while Brent is in his first year of soccer. THREE JUNIORS and a senior make up the forward wall for Viewmont with none of them having varsity experience before the season began. Senior Bod Hudson plays on the left wing with junior Scott Sudwick on the right. In the middle are juniors Jeff Terry and Ken Rozema. All four of these players saw action on last year's JV club. JUNIORS Don Brough and Mike Weddington along with sophomore Brent Magon are the top three substitutes for Coach Herm Winkleman. Says Coach Winkleman, "We're a young club with very little experience. We lost everyone last year." Indeed the Vikes are young but are improving with each game. |
