Show Area Flayers Gain OaMiiall Honors By DAVE WIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY - Three area high school basketball players were awarded all-state all-state honors this past year while many others earned second team all-state and all-region all-region honors as the season awards finally came to a close. TWO PLAYERS, Gordon Anderson of Layton and Mark McCleery of Woods Cross, were named to both Salt Lake papers first team squads. A third player, Russell Florence earned first team all-state honors from one of the papers. Anderson was the big man in the middle for the Lancers and was the main reason for the Layton crew enjoying the success they did this past year. At 6'7" Gordon displayed tremendous quickness quick-ness for his height. " McCLEERY was also the big man in the middle for his club. He was a big reason for the Wildcats going through Region Four with a perfect record and then onto a third place finish in the state. Mark has been selected to represent' the state in several all-star games. Florence, as luck would have it, was also the center on his Clearfield club. He turned out to be the leading scorer in Region One this past season, with an average of right around 20 points a game. EARNING second-team all-state all-state honors were Blaine Benard of Bountiful, Roger Vincent of Clearfield and Brad Thacker of Viewmont in the 4A ranks and Mike Moun-teer Moun-teer of Davis and Jeff Ostler of Woods Cross in the 3A. Benard was the leading scorer on the Braves club this year and is considered by some to be the best shooter in the league. His best effort was a 24 point game against Lay-ton Lay-ton in which he was 10 for 10 from the field and 4 for 4 from the line. ROGER Vincent was the . second man in the one-two inside scoring punch for Coach Craig Hansen at Clearfield. Clear-field. Vincent, who was all-state all-state in football, is best known for his tremendous jumping ability, making his left-handed turnaround jump shot impossible to stop. Thacker was the quick guard for the Vikings this past season. Along with Jim Miller, many thought the Vikes had the best set of backcourt men in the region. Brad led the Vikes in scoring this past season. MIKE MOUNTEER, another all-state football player, is the best all-round athlete at the school. Mike was a three year starter in basketball at the Kaysville school and will undoubtedly find himself on some college club next fall. Jeff Ostler was the leader on the floor for the Wildcats. He was the player they looked for in the tight spots. Another all-round athlete, Jeff has been a catalyst for setting the Cats on top in sports. THOSE PLAYERS, besides those mentioned above, who earned all-region honors were Jim Miller and Kelly Downs of Viewmont, and Brandon Flint and Matt Stireman of Layton. Mark LeCheminant and Lynn Westergard of Woods Cross were also awarded with all-region honors for their efforts this pastyear in the 3A ranks. Tfiis past season the Davis County fans were treated to some of the best basketball in the state and these awards prove it. |
